Overview
Ubuntu Portal is committed to respecting visitor privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how it is used, and what third-party services are involved in delivering this site. We have designed our infrastructure to minimize data collection โ we do not run ad networks, social tracking pixels, or invasive analytics platforms.
This policy applies to all pages served under ubuntuportal.com.
What Data We Collect
Server-Level Analytics
Ubuntu Portal is served through Cloudflare’s content delivery network. As part of delivering pages to your browser, Cloudflare processes standard HTTP request data including your IP address, browser user-agent string, the page URL requested, and referring URL. This data is used for security (identifying malicious traffic), performance optimization (caching decisions), and aggregated analytics.
We use Cloudflare’s built-in analytics to understand general traffic patterns โ which pages are visited most frequently, which countries visitors come from, and how traffic volume changes over time. These analytics are aggregated and do not track individual users across sessions. You can review Cloudflare’s privacy practices in detail in their privacy and compliance documentation.
What We Do Not Collect
To be explicit about what this site does not do:
- No personal accounts or registration. There is no login system, no user profiles, and no stored credentials.
- No third-party advertising. We do not serve ads and therefore do not participate in any advertising data exchanges.
- No social media tracking. There are no Facebook pixels, Twitter widgets, or embedded social sharing buttons that phone home to external platforms.
- No email tracking. If you contact us by email, we do not embed tracking pixels or open-receipt mechanisms in our replies.
- No fingerprinting. We do not use canvas fingerprinting, WebGL fingerprinting, or any other browser fingerprinting techniques.
Cookies
First-Party Cookies
Ubuntu Portal itself does not set any first-party cookies for analytics or tracking purposes.
Third-Party Cookies
Cloudflare may set cookies in your browser as part of its security and performance services. These are functional cookies โ they help distinguish legitimate visitors from automated threats (bot mitigation) and assist with load balancing. Cloudflare’s cookies do not track you across other websites and are not used for advertising purposes.
The specific cookies Cloudflare may set include:
- __cflb โ Used for load balancing across Cloudflare’s network.
- __cf_bm โ Used for bot management and identifying legitimate traffic. This cookie expires after 30 minutes of inactivity.
These cookies are essential to the security and delivery of the site. Disabling them may result in degraded performance or access issues.
Third-Party Services
Cloudflare
Cloudflare provides content delivery (CDN), DNS resolution, DDoS protection, and analytics for Ubuntu Portal. When you request a page from ubuntuportal.com, that request is routed through Cloudflare’s network before reaching our origin server. Cloudflare processes request metadata as described above.
Cloudflare operates a global network of data centers. Your request is typically handled by the data center closest to your geographic location. This means request data may be processed in a different country than the one you are browsing from, consistent with how CDN infrastructure works across the web.
No Other Third-Party Services
Beyond Cloudflare, Ubuntu Portal does not integrate with any third-party services that process visitor data. We do not use Google Analytics, Hotjar, Intercom, or similar platforms. We self-host all site assets โ CSS, JavaScript, and images are served from our own infrastructure through Cloudflare, not from external CDNs or third-party hosts.
Data Retention
We do not maintain our own server logs beyond what Cloudflare retains as part of its standard service. Cloudflare’s data retention periods are governed by their own policies and vary by data type. Aggregated analytics data (page views, traffic by country) is retained indefinitely as it contains no personally identifiable information. Raw request logs are retained by Cloudflare for a limited period as described in their data processing documentation.
If you contact us by email, we retain your correspondence for as long as necessary to address your inquiry and for reasonable record-keeping purposes afterward.
Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including:
- Access โ The right to know what personal data is held about you.
- Deletion โ The right to request deletion of your personal data.
- Correction โ The right to correct inaccurate personal data.
- Portability โ The right to receive your data in a portable format.
Because we collect minimal data and do not maintain user accounts or profiles, there is typically very little personal data associated with any individual visitor. If you have questions about your data or wish to exercise any of these rights, contact us at contact@ubuntuportal.com.
Children’s Privacy
Ubuntu Portal is a technical documentation site and is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes in our infrastructure or applicable regulations. Substantive changes will be noted on our changelog. The content of this page always reflects the current policy.
